Lebanese Oil Spill; Gnawa music in North Africa

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Voices of the Middle East has a conversation with prominent Marine Conservation Specialist Professor Rick Steiner, of the University of Alaska. We talk to him about the worst oil spill catastrophe ever to befall the Eastern Mediterranean, in July of 2006, which resulted from targeted Israeli air strikes on the giant Lebanese fuel tanks of Jiyyeh.

Later in the program, we bring you the first part of  a two-part conversation with ethnomusicologist Dr Tim Abdellah Fuson about the genealogy of Gnawa music in Northwestern Africa. Tim Abdellah Fuson regularly performs with the  North African Fusion Groove band the Dunes and with fellow North African musician Yassir Chadly as well. He will be leading Gnawa Music and Movement classes every Tuesday Night  in November and December at the Zambaleta school in  San Francisco.
