63rd Anniversary of Palestinian Nakba

This week on Voices of the Middle East and North Africa, we look at the historic 63rd anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba. This year on May 15th, to mark the day, thousands of Palestinians held demonstrations at their respective borders. We hear a speech from renowned historian Ilan Pappé addressed the meeting in the Sheffield University in the U.K. and gave a talk titled, The Nakba Revisited: Past, Present and Future Course of the Israeli and Palestinian Conflict.

Photographing the Palestinian Refugee Experience

This week UC Berkeley history professor Beshara Doumani will have a discussion with Professor Issam Nassar of Illinois State University and co-editor of the book, I Would Have Smiled: Photographing the Palestinian Refugee Experience. A collection of essays from a variety of individuals discussing how images taken by Myrtle Winter-Chaumeny, a staff writer for UNHCR.

Artistic Director of Jenin Refugee Camp Killed; Songs from Lena Chamamyan

In this week’s program, we hear a conversation with Juliano Mer Khamis, leading Palestinian rights activist, actor, filmmaker and Artistic Director of Freedom Theater in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West bank. He was shot to death in Jenin last month as he was leaving the theatre. In this interview that was recorded six years prior to his tragic death, Juliano Mer Khamis talks about his award-winning film, Arna’s Children, which he and Danniel Danniel co-directed.
