Libya & Iran Updates; Cheb i Sabbah Fundraiser

This week on Voices of The Middle East and North Africa, we speak with Libyan Professor Ahmida from the University of New England to update us on the current situation in Libya. We will also speak with KPFA’s music programmer Kutay Kugay about the July 8th fundraiser for Bay Area based musical pioneer Cheb i Sabbah who has been diagnosed with cancer. We also discuss the state of political prisoners in Iran and talk with Executive Director of the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran Hadi Ghaemi.

Iran’s Green Movement; Egyptian-American Comedian Ahmed Ahmed

We look at the protest movement in Iranian on the two year anniversary of the Green Movement protests against the rigged Presidential Elections in Iran. We speak with Professor Mansour Farhang of Bennington College about where the pro-democracy is today.

Later in the program we speak with Egyptian-American comedian Ahmed Ahmed about his documentary film titled, Just Like Us.

Yemen Uprising Update; Free Gaza Flotilla

This week on Voices of the Middle East and North Africa we bring up an update on the rapidly changing situation in Yemen. We speak with Yemen specialist and professor Sheila Carapico, who is a visiting scholar at American University in Cairo, about what’s in store for the future of Yemen and the role of the United States.

Later in the program we’ll talk about the upcoming Gaza Peace flotilla with four Bay Area peace activists that are apart of the Free Gaza Movement.

Egypt Update; Aswat Bay Area Music Ensemble

This week on Voices of the Middle East & North Africa, we get an update on the unfolding situation in Egypt. On May 23rd Egyptian bloggers posted critiques and opinions about the transitional government and the grassroots movement for democracy.

Later in the program we hear from Aswat, the Bay Area music ensemble which performed live for us in studio last night.
