Edward Said Speaking about Orientalism
September 25th marked the 14th anniversary of the passing of Professor Edward Said, a post colonial scholar and public figure who permanently changed the conversation about western imperialism and the west’s orientalist gaze towards the east.
Today we’ll remember Edward Said by listening to him speaking about his seminal work, Orientalism, which critiques the racism of the West’s historical and cultural perceptions of the Middle East
The 21st Annual Arab Film Festival
The Arab Film Festival opens in the Bay Area on Friday, Oct 13th, and it will be showing films in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley through October 22. This year’s festival features a short film series on the refugee crisis, a series focused on Saudi films, and a range of other topics spanning from media representation of Palestinians to surfing. Khalil Bendib spoke with the Arab Film Festival’s Artistic Director Deana Nassar about the festival and its expansion to include dates in Los Angeles
