“A Separation” Makes it to Oscar Shortlist

As the film’s title suggests, director Asghar Farhadi’s film A Separation (Jodaeiye Nader az Simin), is about the separation of a married couple, but the story is actually centered on the complex interpersonal relationships between an upper class secular liberal couple and that of an impoverished religiously devoted Muslim couple. The complexities are deep, and Farhadi tries to not take the side of one family over the other in the film.

Syria’s Prospects; Egyptian Film, ‘Microphone’

This week on Voices of the Middle East and North Africa we look at the political situation in Syria as it intensifies as the revolt against Assad’s government spreads to different parts of the country. We speak with Syrian-born political scientist, Professor Bassam Haddad who has just returned from a trip to the region, about the current developments in Syria and what they might mean for the country’s future. Later on in the program, Voices of the Middle East and North Africa contributor Professor Samera Esmeir will be speaking with Egyptian actor and producer Khaled Abol Naga about the award winning feature film Microphone which explores the underground music scene in Alexandria, Egypt.

20th Century Jerusalem; Iranian Filmmakers Jailed

This week we’ll hear a conversation with the Director of the Institute of Jerusalem Studies about Jerusalem at the turn of the 20th century. We also talk about acclaimed Iranian filmmakers, Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasulov both who have been sentence to six years in prison by the Iranian government.

The youngest detainee in Guantanamo Bay; Arab Film Festival

This week, we have a conversation with Lisa Hajjar, associate professor of sociology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who has been writing about Omar Khadr, the youngest detainee at Guantanamo Bay. Later in the program, we speak with Algerian film maker Lyes Salem, who wrote, directed and starred in the award-winning movie “Masquerades,” which was chosen for the opening night of this year’s Arab film festival.

Later in the program we’ll speak with award-winning Iranian-American visual artist Shirin Neshat about her first full-length motion picture titled, “Women Without Men.”
